General and Special Collections:

Tribhuvan University Central Library TUCL receives books and periodicals through purchase and gift. Besides printed materials, the library has also acquired non-book materials like audio books and videocassettes, CD databases, etc. and all these have been arranged in the A/V section.

The collection of General Section is kept for issue. Special Collections are provided for internal use only. The readers are not allowed to borrow the documents from the special collection sections. However, the documents of the special collection sections can be consulted inside the library or can be photocopied. The special collections are as follows:

Nepal Collection:

Nepal Collection is an important special collection of the Library. Any documents published in Nepal, or written by a Nepali author or books on Nepal published anywhere are collected and kept in this section. Beside documents on Nepal, manuscripts, rare books, dissertations, Ph.D. theses etc. are also preserved in this collection. This is one of the highly used collections of the library. At present the collection has ...... volume of materials.

Nepali  Journals COLLECTION

Recently, the library has organized a separate Nepali Research journal collection. The journals published from Nepal in any language are collected and preserved in this section. There are several Nepali journals, which are generally not found in other libraries in Nepal and abroad are preserved here. Rare and book volumes journals are also kept here beside the Nepali research journals. This collection is very useful to research scholars.


Manuscript Collection

The TUCL has a collection of some 550 titles of manuscripts and are kept in the Nepal collection section. Some of them are 200 years old. The library is planning to microfilm these manuscripts for the purpose of preservation as well as for use.


Text book collection

This is another important collection of the library. Approximately 18,000 thousand of books have been kept here. About 50-100 titles are added every month. At least two copies of textbooks prescribed in the curriculum of the central departments of T.U., Kirtipur are kept here. All the books of this section are not issued to the members but can be consulted inside the library only.


Dissertation and Theses Collection:

The library has a collection of 7773 volumes of Dissertations and Ph.D theses. Out of which 552 volumes are Ph.D. Theses and the rest 7221 volumes are Dissertations submitted by the students of Master's degree programme for partial fulfillment of their prescribed course. Some of the Ph.D. Theses are also available on CD ROM. These are maintained in the Nepal collection section. The library has also published a bibliography of Ph.D. theses.


American Studies Collection

A collection on American Studies was donated to the library on March 9, 1997 by the American Center Kathmandu on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of the Nepal-US diplomatic relations. The collection contains 1300 volumes of books out of 1100 titles. This collection is very useful to the social scientists, students and also to those interested on American life, culture and literature. A separate catalogue and a printed form of title/author Index of the collection are available for retrieval of the records. TUCL's computer database also includes these records for public access computer terminals. Books in this collection are not available for loan. Sample catalogue entry:

ISBN Collection

25,050  +  volumes. This collection was started since the inception of ISBN system in Nepal, i.e. January 2000. The International Standard Book Number headquarters in Berlin Germany had appointed the TUCL as the ISBN National Agency in Nepal to distribute ISBN numbers. The authors/publishers who publish new books having ISBN numbers printed on them have to deposit a copy of each of the titles at the TUCL ISBN National agency.

This collection comprises books, maps, CD-ROMs. An in-house computer database using CDS/ISIS software has been created for search and record keeping purpose.


Reference Collection

TUCL has a separate Reference Collection Section with open access facility. Multi-volume books, expensive books and books having only referral values have been kept in this section. Fully catalogued, this section contains 20,500+ volumes of books comprising a wide variety of subjects in various forms, viz. Bibliographies, General Encyclopedias, Subject Encyclopedias, Dictionaries, Atlases, Biographies, Handbooks, Manuals, annual reviews etc. TUCL has best collection of Dictionaries in Nepal. Some of the most important and expensive and rare titles kept in this section are as follows.

Singh Collection:

This valuable collection was donated in 1976 by late General Shingha Shamshere J.B.R,. the son of Rana Prime Minister Chandra Shumshere. The collection contains 5000 volumes of books along with British furniture. Approximately, one third of the collection is on history. Remaining is on religion and culture of Nepal, India, Tibet, Bhutan Sikkim, world history, western classical literature, light fiction, architecture, gardening, hunting etc. Some of the rare titles are as follows:

·  Cavenagh (capt) – Rough Notes on the state of Nepal, its government army and resources 1851

The collection also contains letters, memoirs, official papers speeches etc of the British period of Indian history and its relationship to Nepal.The collection is in close section. Readers can visit and make use of the collection. Separate catalogue has been prepared to retrieve the titles of the collection.


RARE COLLECTION

TUCL has also a special collection of rare books and journals. Rare books are preserved in the archive section and rare journals are maintained in the periodical section. Both collections are on close access; hence the users are required membership reference card to use the materials of this section. At present 400 titles of rare books are available in the library. Similarly, 38 titles of rare journals are preserved in the periodical section. Some of the rare titles of books and journals are as follows:

AUDIO-VISUAL COLLECTION

TUCL has also maintained a section of Audio-Visual materials and materials in non-print formats, viz. Audio Cassettes, Videos, CD-ROMs, Microfiche, Microfilms etc. The library is planning to render service to the users by adding more A/V materials especially the CD-ROMs database service.

To keep pace with the developments in Information Technology and its impact on library services and being mindful of readers growing needs, the TUCL despite financial constraints, has been trying to introduce some of the Info-Tech facilities to provide better service to its clienteles. Keeping it in mind the library is in the process of developing a digital library of Audio-Visual materials.

Currently, the library has the following number of A/V materials.

The following equipment is available in the Library to make use of the above collection:

·   Microfilm reader and Microfiche reading machines ( at present not working  well )

 

AMERICAN STUDIES COLLECTION:

American Studies Collection is provided by the American Government  on the occasion of the 50th years of Nepal- America Diplomatic relation in 1998. The collection consists of 1300 Volumes of books on American Studies like American History, Politics, Literature, Culture etc. All those books are processed and created the database for retrieval of the users. The American Study Collections are organised seperately.

 

JAPANESE STUDIES COLLECTION:

Vice-Chancellor of Tribhuvan University Prof. Dr. Govind Prasad Sharma and The Ambassador of Japan, Tsutomu Hirakoka and  jointly inaugurated the Japanese Studies Collection at TUCL on February 23, 2005 amidst Special programme. The collection consists of more than 300 volumes of useful and valuable books including documents on Japanese studies, Journals, newspapers etc. Japan University Student Association of Nepal (JUSAN), Sakai Lion Club and Imanishi Memorial Fellowship Trust have donated the collection. The collection is rich academic resources for the users especially on Japanese Studies. JUSAN and Sakai lion's Club will continuously help to enrich the study.

NEPALESE NATIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHY (NNB):

TUCL has been compiling the Nepalese National Bibliography since 1981. It acquires Nepalese publication by purchase and as a gift. Nepal Research Center, Germany has supported TUCL in compiling NNB. So far TUCL has published eight issues of this publication. The latest  issues of NNB includes the publications from 1997-1999.
